X-Files: "The Scene" (1/1) By Ten, April 1997, Posted August 1997 The doctor at Georgetown was pretty sure he'd wake up within the next twelve hours. But since she had been at his side for thirty hours straight, he insisted she go home. Scully fought, but for once this guy was a match for her and threatened to bar her from Mulder's room. He said if she went now, the nurses would be instructed to let her in again after four hours, not eight. Otherwise they would call security. So she cursed him under her breath, got her mother to stand in for her, and headed home. Then she remembered his fish. Task done, she was turning to go when she noticed the video tape. It was lying on top of the VCR. A tape which was out a lot over the last few months - she recognised it from the label and her visits. She had of course never been privy to its contents, but it was definitely one of "those" videos. Perhaps the tiredness made her reckless. Whatever, she picked up the video and saw it was stopped about forty- five minutes in. She hesitated. Damn it! She was going to find out what was so interesting. Scully fed the tape into the machine, turned the TV on, and hit play. Then she nearly hit the floor. A man and a woman rather busy on a bed. A brown-haired man. A red-haired woman. Fumbling for support, Scully sat jarringly on the sofa. Eyes fixed to the scene. When it finished, it cut to the same man and woman walking down a street, talking. Scully tuned out what they were saying, tuned out that this was actually a bit of "plot progression" and instead focused on their faces. They were nothing like her and Mulder. But in that dim bedroom scene, with a little imagination, a little longing, it was quite easy to... Oh God. She hastily pressed stop, then rewind. But she didn't rewind it to the point he left it at. She let it go right back to the start. Then she settled herself comfortably - but nervously - on the sofa and watched the whole movie right through. Not really any comparisons with her or him. A totally different story and characters. There were quite a few sex scenes with that man and woman. Some of which Scully didn't have to be a medical doctor to know were physically impossible. She noticed the scene forty-five minutes in was fuzzier than the rest of the movie, as if it had been played over and over again. She also noticed "the scene" was the tamest of the lot. Tamest in a good way. Sincere, loving, actually possible. God she loved the way his mind worked. Oh yeah, and the rest of him too... She dozed off on his sofa, and woke to hear her cellular. The doctor. Mulder was inexplicably getting worse. The ridiculous thought hit her that he'd somehow found out she'd seen the tape and was dying of a sudden attack of morality. Scully rushed to his side. Touched his face, checked the monitors. Looked at her pale mother. They were losing him. "Mom, can you...just go out into the hallway for a minute? I want to say something to him." "Of course, dear. Stay with us, Fox. I'll even start calling you Mulder if you do." She exited. Scully leaned down, into his ear. "Mulder, yes, I did see that video. And no, I won't let you die of shame. You have to come back, Mulder. If you don't come back how are we going to get to try all that in real life? Think about it." Apparently he needed fifteen minutes to weigh up his choice. After that he began to improve. The doctor was puzzled by Scully's smug smile. Margaret had an idea, but didn't ask for confirmation. And Mulder woke up wondering why he had such a feeling of blissful anticipation... THE END.
